Kорабль построен Финеасом Петтом (Phineas Pett) в Англии, в Вулвиче в 1637 году.

Впервые в истории судостроения имело три батарейные палубы, расположенные одна над другой.
Xудожественное оформление корабля было разработано Томасом Хейвудом и выполнено Джоном и Маттиасом Крисмасом за общую сумму 6691 фунтов.

Вооружение

Первоначально было запланировано 90 пушек ценой 20.592 ф.ст., но это количество было увеличено до 102, когда Король посетил корабль 7 декабря 1638 года. Сметная себестоимость нового вооружения была 24.447 ф.ст. 8 ш. 8 п., к которым было добавлено 1700 ф.ст.

Проект представлен в форме модели и был показан Финеасом Петтом королю. Первоначальные размеры : длина по килю 124 фута , ширина 46 футов, и осадка 22 фута.

В обсуждениях между Адмиралом сэром Джоном Пеннингтоном, Вице-адмиралом сэром Робертом Манселлом, и Финеасом Петтом предложенный проект был пересмотрен на новые размерения: длина киля 127 футов, ширина 46 футов и 2 дюйма.

Проект снова изменили, киль был укорочен на один фут и ширина была увеличена на четыре дюйма.

Произведена закладка киля корабля в Вулвиче.
25 сентября 1637
Первая попытка спуска корабля потерпела неудачу.

Корабль спущен на воду.
12 июля 1638
Корабль подготовлен к морским испытаниям.

Надстройка была уменьшена в высоте, и удалены кормовые брамсели.
28 сентября 1652
Участвовал в сражении Kentish Knock и получил серьезные повреждения. Оставшуюся часть Первой Датской войны провел в гавани.
1659-1660
Перестроен на судоверфи города Чатхем главным судосборщиком Джоном Тейлором.

Переименован в Royal Sovereign при перестройке.
